Bryana Says
The God I believe in is beyond gender. They transcend all those categories that separate us from each other—that split us into hierarchies and rivalries and heartbreak. But within the All-In-All-ness of the Divine, I think there is plenty of room for imagination. Sadly, in the cultures that shaped my early views of God, that imagination has produced mostly lop-sided results. “God,” people still tell me often “is male.” And male is the only way some people can picture the Creator of the cosmos. I know I’m not the only little girl who sobbed over the pages of the Bible looking so hard for evidence of my equal worth and not finding it. In this painting, I have made a first attempt at depicting God as little-girl-me really needed to see Them: female and fiery and fervent with love. And not so hopelessly far away from “getting” me.
