For many years now, I have been dreaming about creating a little set of illustrations for Sam's Song in the Orc-Tower as it appears in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Two Towers." This lyrical declaration of stubborn hope comes from a place of murky darkness and desperation, when Sam Gamgee is alone in the fearful land of Mordor, fruitlessly searching for the captured Frodo. It is in this tumultuous, lonely, and muddled situation that Sam composes these verses celebrating indomitable, clinging courage – a poem which has long been one of my favorite of Tolkien's lyrics.

This set was commissioned by a client and although the original pieces have been sold, these luxurious prints on premium cotton watercolor paper are a magnificent and affordable substitute. The tiny, intricate watercolor paintings measure approximately 44 mm in diameter and were completed with professional-grade watercolor paints on premium hot-pressed watercolor paper.

In seeking out models for my rendering of The Shire, I ended up choosing the view from the kitchen window of my favorite childhood home, located in a remote village in the Middle East (where I lived until I was fifteen). The tree located outside the hobbit-hole in the painting is an oak tree under which I and my siblings spent many happy hours painting, reading and picnicking, so this piece is special to me in a personal way.

This listing is for a set of two fine art prints created from original watercolor paintings by Bryana Joy. The artwork is printed on 300 gsm archival quality watercolor paper measuring 5x7 inches. Please allow 2-4 business days for this item to ship.

In western lands beneath the sun
the flowers may rise in spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the sun
and stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

International Shipping Notice
Free international shipping is now available for small fine art prints, but please note that your print will be shipped as a letter. It will be mailed in a Kraft paper envelope with a protective cellophane sleeve but without cardboard backing or tracking. This is because international USPS rates for rigid packages are prohibitive for items of this size. (However, if you'd like to have your print shipped with tracking and cardboard backing, feel free to select the "USPS First Class International" option during checkout.) Small prints shipped within the US will be mailed with cardboard backing to ensure maximum durability during transit.
