ABOUT THIS LISTING
This listing is for an original miniature matchbox diorama scene featuring a pair of fiddlehead ferns unfurling in front of a woodland waterfall. The individual diorama components were painted with professional-grade watercolors on 100% cotton Arches watercolor paper and assembled in a real kitchen matchbox using archival-quality adhesive. This is not a print, but a one-of-a-kind original painted papercraft creation.
SIZE NOTE: The pieces in this series are roughly 0.5. inches in depth. Their length and width varies based on the size of the bespoke frames affixed to the front of each piece. Most are a little under 2.5 x 2 inches, with a couple just slightly exceeding 2.5 inches in length.
DISCLAIMER: The full collection of nine pieces is shown in some of the listing photos to give a sense of the larger project to which this piece belongs. However, this listing does not include the full set. It is for only one of the nine pieces.
ABOUT THE SERIES
"Now No More The Frost" is a series of nine handmade watercolor matchbox diorama scenes titled after a line from English Cavalier poet Thomas Carew's 1640 poem "The Spring." I designed and crafted this collection of intricate miniatures in March of 2026 after a particularly bitter winter season in my part of the Mid-Atlantic. It is my hope that these delicate one-of-a-kind 3D scenes will be treasured as emblems of hope in the face of Long Winters. Back to Thomas:
Now that the winter's gone, the earth hath lost
Her snow-white robes, and now no more the frost
Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream
Upon the silver lake or crystal stream;
But the warm sun thaws the benumbed earth,
And makes it tender; gives a sacred birth
To the dead swallow; wakes in hollow tree
The drowsy cuckoo, and the humble-bee.
(Thomas Carew, "The Spring")
