MINI PRINT: This cropped print measures 5x7 inches, including a 0.5 inch white border around the perimeter of the piece, and is signed and labelled with pencil in the bottom margin. Printed on 230 gsm archival matte paper.

In spite of all your best efforts, does the Candle of Hopes sometimes slip right through your fingers? Do all schemes for justice and all hankering after a more humane world sometimes seem destined to prove a looping failure? Are there days when you feel neither capable nor beloved? I wanted to make a painting about that moment of losing the light—that sinking minute. I want to honor the truth that sometimes our lives are like this: scrappy, tossed about, adrift. The dignity we’ve worked so hard to win is denied. The bright plans we’ve laid fail to hatch. The war we hoped was over starts up again. And we make our fingers as long as they go and stretch out desperately while the light goes. This, to me, is a holy place: every spot where someone is in mourning because they are yearning towards a Whole World.
