ABOUT THIS LISTING This listing is for an original miniature matchbox diorama scene featuring a dreamy sunrise seascape scene. The individual diorama components were painted with professional-grade watercolors on 100% cotton Arches watercolor paper and assembled in a real kitchen matchbox using archival-quality adhesive with spacers in between the layers to add depth. The matchbox is painted with velvety shell pink acryla gouache and the finished matchbox scene is fitted with a bespoke paper frame painted to resemble driftwood. The frame is made of super-thick 600gsm Arches paper and is the thickness of ultra-heavy cardstock. The finished pieces, including the frame, is roughly 2 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches in size.
This is not a print, but a one-of-a-kind original painted papercraft creation.

ABOUT THE TITLE “The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” ― Jacques Cousteau
The title of this piece is a callback to John Denver's 1975 musical tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau's research ship, the Calypso. Like Denver and Cousteau, I'm fascinated by the wealth of both aesthetic and scientific treasures contained in our planet's as-yet-only-partially-explored ocean deeps, and wanted to channel into this piece some of that awe in the face of the ocean. As John Denver put it:
"To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean, to ride on the crest of the wild raging storm. To work in the service of life and the living, in search of the answers to questions unknown. To be part of the movement and part of the growing, part of beginning to understand. Aye, Calypso, the place’s you’ve been to, the things that you’ve shown us, the stories you tell. Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well."
