In this painting, I hoped to capture something of the low sigh the soul lets out at the moment it becomes clear the Dove of Peace is taking wing. In time-honored tradition, I tend to conceptualize Peace as a darling bird: that fragile, feathered thing whose arrival gladdens our hearts—but she can’t abide the bombs. See how she tilts her delicate head to peer up at the disconsolate soul? To say, “I’m tremendously fond of you, but would you take a look at this place? Can’t stay long!” I dream a lot about how we can make this planet more homey for the darling bird. I feel the press of her small pink feet on my thumb, the rising hurricane of her wings. Doesn’t it make you always want to call out, even at the risk of some grave personal sacrifice, “O please! Don’t go!”?
