About This Painting
One of the things I love most about this Blue Planet we share is its oceans. The pull of coast and cove has been after me all my life, and ocean has rolled on in my mind’s eye as a metaphor for much that is beautiful, some things that are frightening, and a handful of things that are maybe both—liberation, for example; the freedom to choose our own way according to our reason and moral imagination. Also, death: the gulf that opens suddenly between us and the loved one; those splitting but binding waters the crossing of which is a mystery. This painting is a tribute to the oceanic invitation to take a step or two out of our smallness, to at the very least make a grasp after transcendence.
About This Listing
This is a 6x8 studio gouache painting completed on professional-grade watercolor paper mounted to a cradled wooden panel. To protect the water-based gouache paint from moisture, the painting has been lovingly treated with a three-step varnishing process consisting of a spray varnish suitable for water-based media, an isolation coat, and two coats of UV-resistant gloss varnish. The birchwood panel has been sealed with Danish oil to increase its longevity, and a signed label affixed to the back of the panel certifies its authenticity and specifications. The painting has already been glued into a pinewood floater frame and comes ready to hang! Including the frame, the full dimensions of this piece are roughly 7.25 x 9.25 x 1.25 inches.
