January 01, 2021: I just moved to Pennsylvania! I'm actively shipping all orders right now and I don't expect any disruptions, but I'm still looking for an apartment, so if you'd like to mail me a letter or postcard, do hang onto it until I'm able to announce a permanent mailing address. Any mail sent to the Tyler, TX return address will be held by my family and I will receive it eventually, but it may be a little while.

"Back at Monticello, Sally is going on seventeen.
She strokes her taut belly in a room with no windows
and it’s in that place I imagine the holy spirit is perched,
not dove this time but nightingale."

[Bryana Joy, from "Nightingale,"
the November 2020 Puzzle Pieces poem]

About This Listing

Watercolor, iridescent ink, and professional-grade colored pencil on 320gsm hot-pressed Arches watercolor paper measuring 8.5 x 8.5 inches. Signed by the artist. This is an original painting, not a print.

The painting will be shipped with a copy of Bryana Joy's poem, "Nightingale," signed and printed on handmade artisan paper.

Please note that this original painting has a pastel-like color quality and lower contrast than the fine art prints created from the same piece. This is simply due to the nature of the paper and art media, and should be no cause for concern.

Artist's Note
The more I study history, the more I adore Black women. As a group, they have carried the weight of heinous wrongs, and have faced the world's great darkness with astonishing courage. This painting seeks to honor that courage and to postulate that the stories that get hushed up in their time will be told loudly in eternity, and the people we didn’t treat as very important will be guests of honor. Also, it's about the way God is present with our sadness, like the little birds that make songs through the night.
